Is AI something to be worried about?

I don’t know, I’m not very bright. But, probably? A bit?

I personally got started on Fiverr when I was absolutely new to this, about 10 years ago. Dreadful, I was. Gracefully though, I was allowed to be rubbish, and get practise, feedback, and consistent work so I could improve.

All of this low-level, low-budget work will get hoovered up by synthetic voices, and I am absolutely sure that this is a critically awful thing for the industry.

How on earth is anyone who isn’t already a trained actor supposed to hop in front of a home studio setup (which costs £££ by the way) and deliver something straight away up to the higher end of the industry standard?

The investment now for new voiceover artists is prohibitively high, you would have to front load half a decade’s worth of training, before you’ve even booked a single job.

It’s a damn shame, and this was mostly a ramble, but it is the only part of AI voices worth talking about. They’re consistent, but too much so, and they lack soul. I’m not too worried about the higher end of the scale, though I imagine it will take a temporary hit (blind optimism perhaps).

I’ll never use AI voice tech, I’m lucky enough that my voice and style are quite imperfect, so they’ve got that human element. I worry for the announcer types.

Gosh, what a mess of a development it is. If I was in power (hilarious), they’d have to think of a stronger word for regulations, and I’d be doing that. The incoming effect on news and education dissemination is absolutely terrifying to consider.
