Do you offer Voiceover Coaching?

Well, I am flattered you ask as that means I look like I know what I’m doing. Thank you, the ruse has worked.

The answer is “sort of”. People are way too quick to become coaches in this industry (not sure why, similar to the acting world), and I don’t think I have enough expertise to impart on the actual voice side of things to feel confident taking payment for this.

Every voice is different, and I am not a ‘market buyer’, so I could even be detrimental to someone’s progression if my advice was misguided.

What I am happy to do though is take questions through my email or on a quick call, and give a rough framework for people struggling to get into the industry. It’s a hard thing to break into, but doable to various degrees by most folk.

It really boils down to “be yourself”, and “be pleasant”, though. People want to work with people, at the end of the day, not a faceless business. Personality and connection go a long way. Lord knows Hugh Grant paved the way for me to succeed internationally with his affable, ‘bumbling Englishman’ persona.

Take feedback well, it is practically never meant in bad faith, and the sooner you can take critique without faltering, the better. No one is giving you feedback on your day-to-day voice, they only want to get the best out of you in the voiceover side of things. It’s fair, and exactly what we signed up for!

They’re also paying, so some humility goes a long way…

It’s a wonderful skill to have, and a fantastic industry to be in. I am very lucky, and I would like to help others get lucky too.
